Ubuntu AU InstallFest Wrap Up
Thanks to everyone who turned up to the Brisbane Ubuntu InstallFest last weekend at the Brisbane State library. We had around 20 people turn up for the day and comprised of people wanting to install Ubuntu, people wanting to ask questions about Ubuntu and people wanting to help others. It was good to see that we were able to get enough people in that no one wanting to install Ubuntu ever had to wait.
Photos of the day have been put up on the team's flickr group page for everyone to peruse and contribute to.
A special mention needs to go to Chris for his heroic effort with a certain Acer laptop that apparently had a backlight bug that meant that despite it working it looked for all purposes that the screen wasn't displaying anything. Several hours later we learnt that every time the laptop booted it defaulted to switching off the backlight but all that was required was to press the function keys to increase the brightness and it would function if you put in the right boot switches.
There were plenty of discussions held and the general consensus was that we felt we should aim for a second event like this around the June/July school holidays so that it would compliment the April and October Release Party events without getting too frequent. We will be trying to liaise with other locations so we can make it truly an Australian wide regular event. The title of InstallFest was a little misleading though as a lot of people were just interesting in learning more about Ubuntu so something more like an Open Day would be more appropriate, watch this space!
Thanks to Paul at Liberty Systems & Software for providing the refreshments for the day, it enabled people to sit down and relax and socialise when they weren't busy explaining or installing things.
We were also provided some supplies by Canonical for organising the day and now that we are an approved LoCo we now have a banner and tablecloth that means anyone who wants to organise an event under the LoCo banner and is in need of some supplies just email me and we can discuss how best to make this happen.
I look forward to catching up with everyone again at the next Release Party and seeing what other cities can come up with.
